In order to enter into IT as a systems administrator (sysadmin), the typical entry level requirements include:
Education:
- Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in IT, computer science, information systems, or related field. Information technology certificates can also be sufficient.
Experience:
- 1-2 years in a related IT role like help desk, IT support, desktop support, network technician, etc.
- Internships related to systems administration.
Certifications (helpful but often not required for entry-level):
- CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+.
- Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate
- Cisco CCNA
- Linux certifications like Linux+ or RHCSA
Skills & Knowledge:
- Basic understanding of computer hardware, operating systems, networking protocols and concepts.
- Familiarity with installing, upgrading and patching servers, configuring Active Directory, managing backups, etc.
- Solid troubleshooting methodology and customer support skills.
- Scripting or basic coding ability (PowerShell, Python, Bash etc.).
- Security best practices and protocols.
Other Valuable Qualities:
- Problem-solving orientation and analytical thinking.
- Good communication and documentation abilities.
- Being a team player and ability to learn on your own.
Getting an entry level systems admin job is definitely possible even without a lot of experience if the applicant displays enthusiasm and a willingness to learn.
So, how do you get a SysAdmin position without prior experience?
First, we get a game plan and then we execute. You may not have the ability to wait for a 2 or 4 year degree. But having a plan of action along with showing progress toward goals that HR will find favorable is a quicker alternative.
